Info
This song cycle travels the highways through parts of America, from New York to Ohio, Kentucky, Tennessee, Mississippi, and Louisiana. The songs are rooted in specific places and experiences but also serve as a reflection on the encounter with the artist’s own distorted mirror image as a European in the United States: So much feels familiar and points back to deep cultural memories and roots – the music, the places, the language, the stories, the cars, the instruments. And yet, so much remains different and alienating. This feeling of both coming home and being away forms the songs and how they are sung and accompanied. The title represents the traces that American cultural dominance has left in the artist and his generation, the reflection on what he saw and the people he met, the aftereffects of a modern capitalist societal structure that is so evident everywhere.
The concert at Spor Festival is a live setting of the Aftermath album, released by Dacapo Records.

Niels Rønsholdt (b. 1978) is a Danish composer from Aarhus, and his works include experimental operas, symphonic music, installations, performances, songs, and chamber music. Rønsholdt works with a kind of ‘method composing’ where conceptual constructions involve performance, text, and a musical expression that often references mainstream music or the history of Western classical music. A main theme in Rønsholdt’s latest works has been history and memory and how it influences the present identity, as well as the inherent cultural identities of instruments and music genres.
